Rumah
What is home? It can be a physical space, a group of friends, the smell of familiar food, one’s native language, the feeling of comfort… Home can be many things and it can also be in music.
In 2023, Elizabeth and Madeline Saputra, who met as colleagues in the Conservatory of Amsterdam, got together for a school project. As one of the few Southeast Asians in the school, they felt drawn to creating a project exploring how they can fuse their cultural identities with their classical background. The result of this was the project, Rumah, meaning “home” in Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia. Together, Elizabeth and Madeline invite audiences to join in their exploration of the many layers that “home” can exist in, through unheard classical music from Singapore and Indonesia.
Rumah has been performed in various unique locations, including art galleries and famous venues such as Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and The Esplanade in Singapore, and has been featured multiple times on NPO Klassiek (Dutch classical music radio programme).
